And at Ford, she has the freedom to craft what a high-value day looks like for her, both personally and professionally.--Who Marcy KlevornWhat Executive Vice President President of Mobility, Ford Motor CompanyWhere Greater Detroit Area--500 a.m.My alarm goes off and I sneak out of bed to let my husband, also a Ford employee, get a few more zs.As I sip my coffee, I flip through my emails. I like making this the first activity of my morning. I can start my day knowing Im caught up on what is happening. Also, being part of a in aller welt enterprise means people on the other side of the world might be waiting for me to weigh in on something before they can move ahead. Its important to me that my response time helps keep our operational speed high. Our gruppe is moving fast and I am committed to not being the thing that slows them down. 525 a.m.Next, its off to the treadmill. Even if I can only do 10 minutes, I make sure I get the blood pumping. I used to do my morning run only if I had time to complete three miles, about 30 minutes. Too many mornings, I found myself skipping because I couldnt spare the time. So n ow, I am committed to running every morning even if I only have time to log one mile.6 a.m.After a quick shower and my morning prep, I assemble my breakfast always a protein shake with fresh fruit, spinach, almond milk, and protein powder. I like to make enough to pour a second glass and take it into my husband, who is usually up and moving by this time of the morning. Its my way of ensuring we connect before we run off to our busy jobs.615 a.m.Its off to the office. I listen to the news on the way particularly Automotive Insights to stay up to date. 700 a.m.The meetings have begun. Setting aside specific time on my calendar to do such things as prepare for big meetings and catch up on important reading is a great way to keep those me activities from always falling to the end of the day when my brain is tired and other life demands need attention. The upcoming board meeting is important. FSM is one of two LLCs operating under Ford Mobility. Through these businesses, we are transforming the way people and goods will move around our cities in the future. We have some important decisions to discuss with the hauptplatine that will help us accelerate our work and I plan to be ready. In preparing for important discussions, empathy is important, so I use some of this time to think about each stakeholders perspective. NoonAfter more meetings, its time for lunch. I dont always get time to focus on my lunch, but I make it a point to ensure I am feeding my body well, even if it means doing it while I am also discussing the future business of self-driving vehicles. Lunch is always a salad with some sort of protein and berries, usually eaten while catching up on email or taking a call.2 p.m.Time for a meeting with the CEO of a major technology company and one of our key partners. I find these conversations incredibly valuable. Not only can we progress important work together, but connecting with leaders outside of Ford and outside of the automotive industry is a great way to stay on top of trends, spot opportunities and get feedback that I cant get from people who are on the same team and seeing things from the same viewpoint. Also, in the world of mobility, partnerships are important the challenges will be solved by an ecosystem.3 p.m.Something To Talk About thats what we call the live webcast stand-ups that we do regularly for the Ford Mobility team. Every two weeks, the mobility leadership team and I take questions from our team members around the world for 45 minutes, share information and recognize key accomplishments. Its a great way to stay connected, hear what the team is thinking about and provide updates on the business. After a few more meetings aimed to move our businesses along fast decision-making is key and a power session to clear through the inbox, its time to leave the office for home. Once a week, I often use this commute time to call my mom (thanks to SYNC hands-free connectivity). Staying connected to loved ones my mom, my son and daughter-in-law, dear friends is nourishment for my spirit. Just as we cant let a busy schedule get in the way of ensuring we are feeding our bodies properly, we have to be equally attentive to feeding our own spirits.730 p.m.Speaking of staying connected, when I get home, its time for dinner with my husband one of my favorite times of the day. We lead busy lives, but we try really hard to have some time together each night.10 p.m.One final che ck of email, a few minutes of chopping fruit for tomorrows breakfast, and then its time to turn out the lights and get some rest at about 1030 p.m. Thats the goal anyway. Gaining Respect and Authority as a Younger Manager
Gaining Respect and Authority as a Younger Manager Managing people is a challenge no matter the size of your team or how well you relate to its members, but perhaps one of the most difficult situations a younger manager may find him or herself in is one in which subordinates are 10 or more years older. As human beings, we naturally tend to prejudge the people around us in bestellung plan our behavior at the individual and group levels and may make assumptions that are not completely on the mark. In order to avoid making some potentially serious professional (and social) faux pas, and generally putting your subordinates off their lunch, ignore the following myths about professional relationships between the age groups and bosses/subordinates in general. The easiest assumption a younger manager can make about older subordinates is that you just cant relate to them on a personal level. The idea is th at you better understand peers that are near your age since you view the world through a similar cultural lens and have more relatable experiences. But even if you arent in the same place as your older team members, that is not an excuse to show a lack of interest in their lives. You can still ask about families, past experiences, goals, and other common interests that most people have in common at any point in life. By forging a personal connection, you will better understand how to motivate and communicate with your employees, which makes you a more respected, effective leader. One of the biggest mistakes managers can make, regardless of the average age of your team, is to assume that you know more than they know. You need your teams input when making decisions and you should seek to learn from their experience whenever you can. Older employees are often the most experienced at both what they do and with how the company works. They have probably already experienced most any problem you may come across and know which approaches work and which dont. Older employees want to be a part of the solution, to share their knowledge with you, and help with the decision-making process. Let them.Another myth involves two potential extremes that your older employees need no training at all or that they need more training than anyone. Just because an employee knows more than you about particular issues or has been at a company for one or two decades doesnt mean that he or she knows everything about everything. But nor is it fair to assume that an older employee lacks the technical skills or knowledge possessed by younger workers and so needs far more training. Your best bet is to get to know each employee individually by observing their workflow, noting their strengths and weaknesses, and making training decisions based on empirical data, not prejudiced assumptions. Finally, you cant go in thinking that your older employees will simply write you off as a nave and incompetent youngster. This assumption can lead to inefficiencies and the breakdown of communication since you may avoid confronting these employees since you dont think they will be receptive to your advice or feedback. You need to manage all of your employees which means holding them accountable for their actions, ensuring they perform at peak levels, and helping them to succeed. No matter the age gap between you and your reports, if you are an effective leader that effectively coaches, trains, and recognizes each employee, you will gain their respect and loyalty.

How You Can Increase Your Job Search Odds
How You Can Increase Your Job Search Odds How You Can Increase Your Job Search Odds Yesterdays New York Times ran this article about executives forced to take low paying jobs because of the bad economy. Its a sad read people who have worked hard and built successful careers suddenly finding themselves scrabbling for jobs with low hourly wages and unable to meet even their basic expenses. But one section really stood out to meWhen Ms. Arlt applied for the job, she sent in a stripped-down rsum that hid her 20-year career at national media companies, during which she ascended to vice president of brand development at the On Command Video Corporation and was making $165,000 a year. She decided in 2001 to start her own business, opening an equestrian store and then founding a magazine devoted to the sport. But with the economy slowing, she was forced to shutter both businesses by June of last year. After applying for mora than 100 jobs, mostly director-level and above in marketing and bra nding, and getting just two interviews, Ms. Arlt said she realized last fall that she had to do something to close the monthly financial hemorrhage. There are a few key points to make here.First, 2 interviews in 100 applications is actually not that bad a ratio especially in this climate and especially given that she has been away from marketing for 7 years. If you simply apply to advertised positions, you can expect a similar (or lower) ratio. Thats why you have to be creative about your search (for examples, check out my 13 Ways to Jump-start Your Job Search, or my post on Using Twitter for Job Search). Stop applying to advertised positions and start doing moreSecond, she found 100 suitable advertised jobs even in this climate. That means there were many more positions that were unadvertised and are being filled by professional headhunters, employee referrals or networking contacts. So the lesson to take away from this is that there are jobs out there. The competition is just more intense but and this is the key point almost all your competition is going to be doing just the basics. They are mailing a resume in response to an advertisement. If you take a different path, you will dramatically increase your options of success.Third, none of the executives featured in this article spoke of getting professional help. I assume if they had paid money to a job search coach or resume writer, they would have mentioned that fact (because it would have helped to illustrate how tough the market is right now). This is another great opportunity for you. Do what your competition is not doing invest in setting yourself apart If you have a strong resume, consider a job search coach who can help you plan a strategy. If youre worried about your resume, consider hiring a professional writer. If thats too costly, read up on resume writing and learn how to write your own exceptional resume. (Options include Resume Magic and my own eBook). We all know the old saying when the goi ng gets tough, the tough get going. Its a cliche because its true. The winners in this tough economy will be the people who throw out the old rule books and do everything they can to give themselves an edge.Lets look at the difference it could make. Imagine that a hypothetical job seeker in the same situation as Ms Arlt used a creative search strategy. First, she networked her way into some of those opportunities using LinkedIn and Twitter and thereby increased the 2% response rate to 5%. Then she worked with a professional resume writer to develop a killer resume that truly conveyed her value to an organization, thus increasing the response rate further to 9%. And then she had worked with a job search coach and learned how to ferret out hidden job opportunities, thus boosting the number of opportunities from 100 to 130. Instead of 2 interviews, this candidate could have secured 11 and therefore had a much better chance of success. In tough times, its all about improving your odds. What can you do today to start doing that? (Or what have you already done?)

Benjamin Henry Latrobe
Benjamin Henry Latrobe Benjamin Henry Latrobe Benjamin Henry LatrobeDesigner. Engineer. Canal builder. Painter. Benjamin Latrobe the father of American architecture welches all that and more. Emigrating to the United States from his native Britain in 1795, the versatile Latrobe discovered a young nation still searching for its national aesthetic the perfect blank canvas for his unique vision.Steamship pioneer Robert Fulton, with whom he would later do business, said his genius is for works of a higher order, but he has the happy faculty of accommodating it to anything useful.Latrobe welches one of the nations first formally trained architects and one of its earliest steam engineers. Through his designs for the U.S. Capitol and the White House, he defined the style of federal buildings for generations to come. Through his innovative public works, he brought clean water and better transportation systems to cities from Philadelphia to New Orleans.Latrobe was born in 1764 near Leeds, England,to a schoolmaster father and Pennsylvania-born mother. Educated in England and Germany, he was fluent in multiple languages and fully steeped in the arts and classical scholarship.Latrobe began a new life in America after his first wife died in childbirth, drawn by his mothers stories of growing up in Pennsylvania. Over the remaining 25 years of his life, he would make an indelible mark through a series of innovative design and construction projects for government buildings, banks, theaters, cathedrals, prisons and other high-profile institutional structures. He originated the Greek Revival style in American buildings with his widely imitated Bank of Pennsylvania, designed a landmark academic building for Dickinson College at no cost, and parlayed an acquaintanceship with George Washingtons son into a productive network of powerful clients in the new Federal City taking shape on the banks of the Potomac River.Latrobe pivoted seamlessly between architecture and engineering, d abbling in contracting, surveying and other pursuits along the way. Between difficulty keeping projects on budget and some misguided business ventures, Latrobe spent much of his career on the brink of financial disaster. As an early proponent of steam power, he built Philadelphias first waterworks. His design incorporated two behemoth steam engines to pump water from the Schuylkill River. Piping fresh water to homes for the first time in the citys history, his water system greatly reduced the incidence of water-borne infectious diseases such as yellow fever. In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson tapped him as the U.S. Surveyor of Public Buildings. Soon he was assigned to supervise completion of the Capitol Building. He made important changes to William Thorntons original design and contributed to other iconic Washington, DC, structures including the White House and the Washington Navy Yard. Some of the best surviving examples of his interior work in the Capitol include the National Stat uary Hall (formerly the Hall of the House), the Old Supreme Court Chamber and the Old Senate Chamber, with their ornate murals depicting uniquely American motifs such as corn and tobacco among the classical imagery. During James Madisons administration, he worked extensively with first lady Dolley Madison to refurbish the White House to her elegant standards. As a surveyor and canal builder, Latrobe improved inland waterways in and around the capital to promote lokal navigation. He supervised or consulted on a series of canals linking lakes and rivers with otherwise landlocked cities, creating opportunities for the emerging steamship industry and using cutting-edge technology such as hydraulic cement that could harden in water.Latrobe knew and shared similar business ambitions as Robert Fulton. By 1813, he had grown tired of Washington life and was inspired by the prospect of earning a shipbuilding fortune. He took a short-lived job in Pittsburgh as an agent in Fultons steamboat comp any, remaining in the area for the next few years building boats, taking on architectural commissions and struggling to stay out of bankruptcy. He wrote of his struggles to get ahead With us the labor of the hand has precedence over that of the mind that an engineer is considered only as an overseer of men that dig, and an architect as one that watches others that hew stone and wood. After the War of 1812, the government called him back to Washington to refurbish the fire-damaged Capitol. He was ready.Later in the decade, Latrobe relocated to New Orleans to complete a protracted waterworks project that had been launched by his son, who had died of yellow fever. The city had long captured his interest for its potential as a steamship port, and he immersed himself in several important architectural projects including the Customs House and the St. Louis Cathedral.Ironically, the engineer who had done so much to rid urban cities of yellow fever contracted the disease before the water syst em was completed. He died in 1820 at age 56.Michael McRae is an independent writer. His genius is for works of a higher order, but he has the happy faculty of accommodating it to anything useful.Robert Fulton on Benjamin Latrobe
